nLighten upgrades Bristol data centre for AI workloads

The Bristol refurbishment adds AI-ready capacity as part of nLighten's wider UK expansion programme.

nLighten has announced the completion of a refurbishment at its Bristol data centre facility. The upgrade is designed to support higher-density, AI-ready infrastructure in response to growing demand for compute capacity across the UK.

The project forms part of nLighten's wider UK expansion programme. The company is investing more than £100 million in its network to expand digital infrastructure capacity and support growth in the technology sector, particularly in regions where demand is increasing.

The Bristol upgrade is intended to provide access to low-latency, high-performance computing infrastructure for data-intensive applications, including AI and cloud services. Across the UK, nLighten is developing infrastructure aimed at supporting businesses and public sector organisations with resilient, sovereign and energy-efficient services.

The refurbished Bristol facility includes upgraded infrastructure for high-density AI workloads, revised rack configurations and additional data hall space. Improvements include enhanced cooling and power systems, with a target power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.2-1.3, alongside expanded carrier-neutral connectivity. According to nLighten, the upgrades have doubled the site's AI-ready power capacity.

The refurbishment is also expected to generate local employment opportunities, with project activities potentially supporting around 30-40 jobs. Three local contractors were involved in the work, reflecting the role of digital infrastructure investment in regional employment and supply chains.

As AI adoption increases across sectors, demand for regional infrastructure is also growing. Bristol's technology ecosystem, together with its strengths in defence and AI research, makes it a location for organisations seeking low-latency and secure infrastructure close to where data is generated.

The facility is also intended to serve as a Sovereign Infrastructure Hub for organisations with requirements relating to data residency and security, including support for emerging quantum-safe security capabilities.

The refurbishment aligns with nLighten's broader strategy to expand its edge data centre platform across Europe and increase regional digital infrastructure capacity.
