STT GDC launches first data centre in South Korea

STT GDC opens STT Seoul 1, marking its entry into South Korea's burgeoning digital landscape.

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres has launched STT Seoul 1, its first data centre in South Korea, developed in partnership with Hyosung Heavy Industries, which retains a 40% stake in the project. The development expands STT GDC’s footprint in Asia and is positioned to serve demand for AI and cloud infrastructure in Northeast Asia.

South Korea has been identified as a growing market for digital services and infrastructure, with increasing requirements for computing capacity. STT Seoul 1 is aligned with STT GDC’s strategy of investing in markets where digital service demand and infrastructure development are both increasing.

Located in Gasan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, the facility has approximately 40,000 square metres of floor space and a planned IT load capacity of up to 30MW. Full operational readiness is scheduled for June 2026, with intended use for hyperscale and enterprise workloads as well as high-density computing applications.

The opening involved participation from local and international representatives, reflecting cooperation between stakeholders in the development of digital infrastructure. The project is also situated within broader national plans related to expanding AI and digital capabilities.

From a technical perspective, STT Seoul 1 is designed for high availability and energy efficiency. It has received Tier III Certification of Design Documents (TCDD) from the Uptime Institute, indicating that the design meets defined redundancy and uptime criteria. Key features include dual power feeds and a redundant DR UPS system designed to support continued operation for up to 24 hours during power interruptions.

The facility’s cooling system incorporates thermal energy storage and is designed to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.3. It is also associated with LEED Gold certification standards for environmental performance and building design.

The collaboration between STT GDC and Hyosung Heavy Industries combines international data centre development experience with local industrial capability, supporting the construction of infrastructure intended for domestic and international workloads.

Overall, STT Seoul 1 adds to South Korea’s data centre capacity and is intended to support AI and cloud computing requirements in the region’s digital infrastructure landscape.
