GCRE launches competition for new energy and data centre partner

GCRE seeks an Energy and Data Centre Partner for its South Wales site, aiming for innovation in rail and sustainable mobility.

The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) proudly unveils a groundbreaking competition in its quest to identify a strategic Energy and Data Centre Partner (EDCP) for its expansive 700-hectare domain nestled in South Wales. As an avant-garde facility dedicated to rail and sustainable mobility innovation, GCRE promises to become the UK's premier net-zero operation railway.

The facility is meticulously positioned on a former open-cast mine, a footprint analogous in magnitude to Gibraltar. GCRE's objective is to marry Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with a state-of-the-art data centre—a partnership rooted in mutual progress and sustainability.

With the EDCP Invitation to Tender (ITT) now live on the Sell to Wales platform, the clock is ticking. The competition ceases on 21st November, and a successful collaborator will be heralded in Spring 2026. Interested parties are fervently invited to stake their claim in this pioneering endeavour.

GCRE Ltd Chief Executive Simon Jones emphasises, "The site offers unparalleled opportunity suited for both renewable energies and data infrastructures. The existing 132kV and 400kV power grids laying across the site, paired with upcoming excellent fibre connectivity, perfectly position the site for such developments."

Jones continued, "Realising this endeavour is pivotal for GCRE. The new partnership is fundamental to drawing in further private rail investments. An assured power landscape paves the way for fruitful future engagements."

Designed in harmony with GCRE's ambition to cultivate an environment for heavyweight rail innovation, the competition aligns with its strategic mission to rejuvenate local prosperity. Developing the site promises fresh rails of economic boom—new green jobs and enriching skills in South West Wales.

Jones conveyed optimism on the unfolding economic future. "As we traverse towards a greener tomorrow and embrace the march of technology, fortifying infrastructure in South Wales will sustain the generation of sustainable energy needed for global technological marvels like AI," he remarked.
