Ant International, renowned for its digital payments and financial technology solutions, has taken a pioneering step by partnering with Google to develop the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). This open rulebook is designed to govern how AI agents execute transactions on behalf of users.
Existing payment systems, tailored around human interactions, fall short when it comes to the needs of AI-driven transactions. With the advent of agentic commerce, AI agents are set to handle a wide array of tasks, from procuring services and products to interacting with other agents. Google and Ant International's collaboration aims to bridge this gap.
AP2 outlines essential components for agentic payments, ensuring that user intent is verified, transactions remain traceable, and accountability is maintained for each party involved in the payment lifecycle. Additionally, the framework is conceived to reinforce privacy and compatibility with various payment methods.
Ant International contributes its extensive knowledge in alternative payment methods (APMs), leveraging its connections with 36 top digital wallets to craft an APM-based agent payments protocol for AP2. Their innovations focus on streamlining the APM checkout process and utilising AI to thwart fraudulent activity.
With AP2, Ant International seeks to provide a reference model for agentic payments, emphasising traceability, compliance, and dispute resolution. The company is testing AP2's real-world applications, where AI agents manage credentials, transactions, and personalised promotions.
A notable mention is Alipay+ Voyager, Ant’s AI travel agent, set to leverage the Agent2Agent protocol. This feature aims to empower sub-agents to book rides via ride-hailing platforms while complying fully with AP2's standards.
Further strengthening their association with Google Cloud, Ant International rolled out the Alipay+ GenAI Cockpit in June 2025. Supported by Vertex AI integrations, this platform propels fintechs and super apps in crafting AI-enabled financial services with elevated security and efficiency.
In a recent development, Ant has introduced its Model Context Protocol (MCP)-based agentic payment solution. By blending its APM checkouts, payment mandate models, and AI technologies, this solution ensures a secure, seamless transaction process.
