ABB has announced a substantial $110 million investment earmarked for the United States in 2025, aiming to expand research and development alongside the manufacturing of its advanced electrification solutions. This strategic move aligns with evolving customer demands for enhanced energy efficiency, improved uptime, and reduced energy costs.
The IEA highlights a significant rise in US wholesale electricity prices, citing an increase of 30-40% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. This shift has heightened the focus on energy cost management.
This initiative promises to create around 200 new jobs, bolstering key sectors such as data centres and the power grid. With data centres in the US anticipated to maintain an annual electricity demand growth exceeding 2% in 2025 and 2026, ABB's focus on advanced electrification solutions comes at a crucial time.
As part of this development, a new production line will be established in Mississippi, dedicated to ABB's innovative Emax 3 circuit breakers. This advanced technology is designed to safeguard critical infrastructures, including data centres.
"This $110 million investment in the US is part of our long-term strategy to support future growth in our biggest global market," shared Morten Wierod, ABB's Chief Executive Officer. "Demand is being driven by key trends, from the surging power needs of AI in data centres, to grid modernisation and customers improving energy efficiency and uptime to reduce their costs. Our investments will ensure we can meet growing demand from customers across North America in line with our local-for-local strategy."
Focusing on cutting-edge technology, ABB is set to invest $15 million in creating a new production line for the Emax 3 circuit breaker at its Senatobia, Mississippi site. This air circuit breaker is poised to enhance the energy resilience and security of power systems in facilities with substantial power needs.
In addition, ABB is allocating $30 million to expand its Richmond, Virginia facility. This project will introduce a test centre, warehouse, and new assembly lines, catering to data centres, manufacturing plants, and utilities using power protection products to ensure the safety of critical systems.
A commitment of more than $30 million in Arecibo, Puerto Rico will increase facility capacity to house three new production lines, vital for producing technologies that distribute electricity, protect equipment, and monitor energy usage in an industrial setting.
Lastly, a $35 million investment will boost ABB’s Pinetops, North Carolina manufacturing facility's capacity to meet demand for advanced voltage grid components applicable to utilities, data centres, and industrial establishments.
