GreenScale acquires Tonstad DataPark in Norway

Plan is to build and operate a 300MVA data centre campus in the region.

GreenScale announces the acquisition of Tonstad DataPark, its newest data centre development. Located in the municipality of Sirdal in West Agder County (NO2), Norway, Tonstad DataPark spans a 420,000 square metre site with 300MVA of grid capacity, approved by Glitre Nett and Statnett - making it the largest data centre development of its kind in Norway. The campus is planned as a four data centre development, with an expected investment of over €2.5 billion, and first capacity targeted for 2027.

Located within one of Europe’s largest generators of wholesale green energy, Tonstad DataPark benefits from Norway’s national energy production, which comes from almost 100% renewable sources, primarily hydropower and wind. This exciting new development will enable GreenScale to deliver a large-scale campus purpose-built for HPC, hyperscale, cloud, and AI workloads, offering customers some of Europe’s most competitive energy costs. At the same time, it reinforces GreenScale’s commitment to grid stability, renewable energy use, and delivering meaningful benefits to the local community.

“After five years in development, we are delighted that GreenScale is realising the exciting vision for Tonstad DataPark.” says Tore Knapskog, CEO of Tonstad DataPark. “We chose to work with DTCP and GreenScale as they gave us complete confidence in being able to deliver – from securing the power, the land and ultimately building a sustainable data centre campus. The last 12 months have been a truly collaborative partnership – one built on trust and ability.”

“This latest chapter in our short but remarkable story is a big step forward for us and the viability of using alternative or renewable energy sources for Hyperscale and AI-ready data centres as a whole, while bringing a new 300MVA campus to the market in a very well developed region for customers in Europe” says Dan Thomas, Chief Executive Officer at GreenScale. “With every facet of this facility oriented towards supporting customer requirements for network, compute and high-density workloads, it was crucial for us to develop in a region with high levels of energy stability, alternative and renewable sources of power, and at the same time ensure a sustainable economic development.”

As developer and operator, GreenScale’s acquisition of Tonstad DataPark represents a key step forward in the company’s bid to promote sustainable design and responsible land use. With easy access to clean energy, this new facility will provide global customers with a European presence powered by rich and sustainable energy at scale.

Zahl Limbuwala, Operating Partner, DTCP:

“The Tonstad DataPark acquisition follows over a year of collaboration with Tore and his team to secure a significant amount of grid capacity and land within this well-established data centre market. Tonstad DataPark’s campus location follows DTCP’s original investment thesis behind

GreenScale, being the establishment of large-scale campus development with long-term access to renewable energy generation situated next to existing highly resilient transmission grid infrastructure.”
