Look north for a safe, private cloud

F-Secure addresses consumer concerns about the security of cloud providers’ technology and what those providers might do with their data.

Those wondering if truly secure, privacy-protected cloud services really exist need only look to security leader F-Secure. Thecompany’s extension into content cloud services is backed by unwavering commitment to data privacy and protection. This stems from its 25 years heritage in online security and from its roots in Finland, where privacy is fiercelyguarded.

Recent research from GfK on behalf of F-Secure has shown that although consumers want personal cloud services, they also want to know their content is private, safe and under their control. When storing content on social networking sites and with cloud storage services, 63 per cent of consumers are concerned about the vulnerability ofstorage providers’ technology. What’s more, six out of ten consumers are concerned about these providers selling their content.

F-Secure’s content cloud has been designed, built and managed according to strict security and privacy policies with multiple layers of security safeguarding encrypted consumer data. F-Secure can assure consumers that security is implemented at all levels. The data itself is stored using ambiguous metadata structures, making finding anything impossible for an unauthorised party.

“F-Secure’s cloud is built to conform to high EU and Nordic standards of privacy,” says Janne Jarvinen, Director, External R&D Collaboration at F-Secure. “We are active in Nordic and EU cloud consortia that focus on how to do cloud the right way. We build systems that can be trusted and it is an honour for us to ‘do the right thing,’ which is keep consumers in control of their data.”

F-Secure’s emphasis on safe cloud services extends to protection from malware in the cloud. All uploaded and backed up content is scanned for malware. This prevents the spread of malware through file sharing and collaboration in the cloud.

Born and bred into privacy
For Finland-based F-Secure, privacy is a closely guarded cultural value backed up by strong privacy laws. EU and Finnish laws protect the secrecy of individuals’ correspondence, telephony and other confidential communications, allowing consumers to control the use of their personal data. Finnish universities also produce IT workers and administrators who are staunchly devoted to privacy practices. Those workers bring their respect for personal privacy with them when they come to work at Finnish technology companies like F-Secure.

“We take personal privacy very seriously in this country,” says Timo Laaksonen, Vice President, Content Cloud at F-Secure. “Worldwide, people are concerned about cloud services, and they wonder about their databeing used for profiling purposes without their permission. F-Secure is theproduct of a country where privacy is part of the very fabric of the culture. Your content is your content and we respect that. With everything we do, we operate under that principal.”

An international thought leader in cloud security
F-Secure is internationally regarded as a pioneer and thought leader in cloud security, with CEO Christian Fredrikson sitting on the board of the European Commission’s European Cloud Partnership. F-Secure stores content for millions of people globally, making up several petabytes of data in five data centres on three differentcontinents. It has a presence in over 100 countries around the world.

F-Secure’s personal content cloud solution Content Anywhere, which is offered through mobile and broadband operators, allows consumers to store, sync, access and share their photos, videos, documents and other files safely anywhere, from any device.
