Why connectivity is the backbone of AI enablement

AI is becoming the backbone of business operations today, however, nearly two-thirds of organisations are yet to scale the technology.  Businesses are missing the fundamental building blocks needed to scale AI and are lacking the adequate networking foundations to support it. Upgrading requires essential investment, but ongoing cost hikes across the supply chain and technology stack are driving hesitancy. For instance, chipset shortages are anticipated to increase the cost of consumer electronics by 20 percent this year, and prices for shipping are rising at rates not seen since 2022 . Many decision makers are battling rising hardware costs while simultaneously looking to AI to deliver return on investment, but it is important to understand that to properly take advantage of AI, connectivity is a vital piece of the puzzle. To fully realise the benefits AI can bring, companies must rewrite their networking strategies to support their AI ambitions.  

The hidden role of connectivity  

AI promises efficiency, automation and long-term cost savings, and many organisations are already seeing the benefits. In fact, research suggests 40 percent of organisations are currently using AI to reduce costs. However, as cloud AI traffic is sustained rather than coming in bursts, successful adoption requires a high-performance and reliable switching infrastructure. Without it, organisations face ongoing latency, reliability issues and higher operational risk – which can quickly erode return on investment. 

In a cost-constrained environment, businesses can’t afford any additional risk. Advanced connectivity must be a top consideration. Choosing a strategy that prioritises solutions that deliver resilience, scalability and long-term value without unnecessary complexity or cost, ensures organisations have the foundation needed for AI.  

Three considerations for intelligent investment 

For organisations balancing tight budgets with rising performance demands, a few criteria matter most in decision-making: 

Design for scale from day one. AI workloads increase network traffic, device density and performance requirements. Retrofitting later is almost always more expensive. Avoid performance degradation, hidden OPEX and delayed AI rollouts by thinking about scale from the outset. 

Prioritise resilience and simplicity. Complex networks drive higher operational costs. Fewer points of failure mean fewer outages and less IT time spent firefighting. 

Optimise, not overspecify. Not every site needs the most premium solution, but every site does need reliability and consistency. 

Optimising networking infrastructure today requires selecting the right networking partner that will mitigate risks. Vendors that own the manufacturing process end-to-end have greater control over pricing and availability, allowing efficiencies to be passed onto the customer. At the same time, local availability also matters. Shorter supply chains can reduce lead times and minimises exposure to shipping cost spikes, helping businesses plan AI adoption and upgrades with greater confidence. Ultimately, the right partner helps organisations invest once and invest well.
